She has encouraged me to do research of my own, especially through the Juicebox Podcast. Dr Zimmerman is also T1D and it is amazing to have her expertise in that regard as well. She has been there every step of the way with her medical advice and encouragement. I couldn’t recommend her enough.

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Dr. Otero has been great since DX, with the exception of being unwilling to write off-label for OP5 prior to it's FDA approval for under 6. That said, his nursing staff is OUTSTANDING. Roxana Huthcroft is our Nurse, and T1D. She actually trialed OP5 prior to us using it, and had good insight. Several of the other nurses and doctors within the Arkansas Children’s Hospital network are also T1D or caregivers for T1s. They’re hyper responsive, super friendly, and very willing to work WITH you without being overbearing.

  • Address 9898 Genesee Ave. La Jolla, CA 92037

  • Phone (858) 824-5335

  • Adult/Pediatric Adult

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments As a Medicare patient, Dr. McCallum got me the Dexcom G6 prior to it being released to those on Medicare. He also went through all the different pump choices with me when it was time to switch. He has no loyalty of one over the other, just what would work best for me. He also uses a 24/7 follow app, and will  make real time changes with me if needed.

His staff knows the reps from Dexcom/Tandem, as well as the supply house reps., and will gladly get me what I need if/when my order doesn’t show-up.

They usually answer messages through the Scripps portal within the hour.

  • Provider Dr. Brad Kimura

  • Address 11600 Indian Hills Rd. Ste 200B Mission Hills, CA 91345

  • Phone 818-827-9950

  • Adult/Pediatric Adult

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Dr. Kimura is the best endo I have seen in my 8 years of being an adult T1D. He is so knowledgeable when it comes to calculating all the settings for my pump. He literally somehow reverse engineers all my numbers to calculate suggestions for my carb ratio, basal rates and sensitivity factor.
I was on the Medtronic pump for years, and all my endos always encouraged automode, but I wasn’t achieving the a1cs I wanted. He was the first doctor to be on board with me going into manual mode and gave me good suggestions on how to set my rates outside of automode. He also helped to get me on the Dexcom and Tslim pump which I had wanted for years and I am loving, even though he said he would prefer the Omni pod if he were a T1D, lol.
Every time I write him a message in the patient online portal, he responds right way, BY CALLING! He doesn’t just write.

  • Phone

  • Adult/Pediatric

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Come to think of it, I’ve never specifically mentioned the podcast during our visits but she totally trusts us to adjust anything we need to and she was willing to put my daughter on insulin very early on. Mine was an early dx and I know a lot of endos make you wait until your kid is practically heading toward DKA before they start insulin. The nurses there are also awesome and I know at least one of them is Looping.

  • Practice/Hospital Drange Hallman Medical Group

  • Address 16311 Ventura Blvd, Suite 850, Encino, CA 91436

  • Phone 818-918-2008

  • Adult/Pediatric Adult

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Dr. Eskander is fantastic! Upon my first meeting with her, she prescribed the Dexcom and her staff submitted my request before I finished my appointment. Dr. Eskander is empathetic, listens well, explains things clearly, and is so supportive. She welcomes questions and is easy to contact through her patient portal. On a follow up where I had lowered my A1C 3.5% in 3 months, she just lit up with excitement for me. Can't recommend her enough!

  • Provider Dr. Kim Christie Winovitch

  • Nurse Practitioner

  • Practice/Hospital Kaiser Permanente Southern California

  • Address 6640 Alton Pkwy, Irvine, CA 92618

  •  Phone (833) 574-2273

  • Adult/Pediatric High Risk Endocrinologist

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments I had a bad experience with Dr. Winovitch as my High Risk Endo over 5 years ago. I cried quite a few times while she made me feel like I was already a bad mother because I didn’t follow her exact diet and would ‘stack’ insulin against her orders.

  • Provider Dr. Leo Pevzner

  • Nurse Practitioner

  • Practice/Hospital Kaiser Permanente Southern California

  • Address 6640 Alton Pkwy, Irvine, CA 92618

  •  Phone (833) 574-2273

  • Adult/Pediatric High Risk Endocrinologist

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Dr. Pevzner was the best endo I have had my entire life. He helped keep my A1C close to 6.0 during my second pregnancy which is a pretty amazing feat (This is pre-loop mind you). He took a lot of time out for each appointment, really listened to me and is the first endo that ever made me feel empowered around my diabetes management and he helped me have a successful VBAC.

  • Provider Dr. Clare Park

  • Nurse Practitioner Margaret Guerrero

  • Practice/Hospital Kaiser Permanente Southern California

  • Address 6 Willard, Irvine CA 92604

  •  Phone (833) 574-2273

  • Adult/Pediatric Adult

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Dr. Park has been supportive and wiling to learn about how Loop works, even if she hasn’t been that helpful as far as figuring out settings. NP Margaret Guerrero is a very kind person, but not as great with actually fine-tuning settings.

  • Provider Dr. Alan Cortez

  • Nurse Practitioner Dr. Sandra Preasmyer

  • Practice/Hospital Kaiser Permanente Southern California

  • Address 2521 Michelle Dr, Tustin, CA 92780

  •  Phone (833) 574-2273

  • Adult/Pediatric Pediatric

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Dr. Cortez is absolutely wonderful, and is very well known for giving his patients a lot of time (our appointments have never been shorter than an hour). He has always gone to bat for us with anything we have asked for (switching to an off formulary insulin, advocating for our daughter to be the first kid to officially prescribe and get Omnipod through the OC Kaiser, etc.). He traditionally goes a little by the book, but he’s always been good about hearing his patients out and working with them. Sandra Preasmyer, is absolutely amazing with children. She is the reason they switched to finger poke A1Cs at Kaiser, and she is always advocating for new ways to make her patients for comfortable. She randomly does things like give the kids bubbles or crayons etc. at appointments just because she wants them to associate the doctor’s office with good experiences.

Colorado

  • Provider Dr. Erin Cobry

  • Nurse Practitioner Sofia Meier

  • Practice/Hospital Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (Pediatric Clinic)

  • Address 1775 Aurora Ct, Aurora, CO 80045

  • Adult/Pediatric Pediatric

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments From the get go, Dr. Cobry has been nothing but supportive. She continues to allow us to be part of the decision process when it comes to making adjustments to our daughters diabetes plan. She never questions us and is always willing to listen to how we are currently managing. She provides feedback and suggestions. Whenever we ask a question, it is answered with respect and insight. We always look forward to our appointments and she has played a big role in lowering our daughters A1C.

  • Address 1775 Aurora Court, Aurora, CO 80045

  •  Phone 303-724-2323

  • Adult/Pediatric Adult

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments I love working with Dr. Akturk! I started seeing him three months after I was diagnosed with type 1, and he and one of the CDEs (Lisa Meyers, who is the BEST) literally sat with my family and me for three hours to explain diabetes and my life moving forward with type 1. He is honest with me and has helped me keep my a1c below 7 since diagnosis.

  • Provider Viralkumar Shah, MD

  • Nurse Practitioner Emily Nease, Elizabeth Beck... two of their great staff all are of great help though.

  • Practice/Hospital Barbra Davis Center - University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

  • Address 1755 Aurora, CO 80045

  •  Phone 303.724.6755

  • Adult/Pediatric Adult

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Was recommended to the Barbara Davis center when I was first diagnosis and have no plans to go anywhere else, I continue to go to them when they are out of my insurance network, because they go out of their way to make sure you are taken care of. They also have a pediatric clinic and even though I have never seen a pediatric Endo I would recommend the Barbara Davis Center to both Adults and Children in the Denver Area.

  • Provider Matthew Benson

  • Nurse Practitioner None Provided

  • Practice/Hospital Nemours Childrens

  • Address 2885 Wellness Avenue Orange City, FL 32763

  • Phone

  • Adult/Pediatric Pediatric

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Dr. Benson and most of his staff are t1 or have relatives that are t1. While we were in the hospital at diagnosis, Dr. Benson’s dexcom alerted him of a low. He grabbed a little bag of skittles from his pocket and carried on with our conversation. It was a small thing, but it made us see a normal person, living a normal life and how they respond to their numbers (we had been panicking at every low and high). Dr Benson had a dexcom sample put on our son before we left the hospital and his education team helped us set it all up. They have done zoom classes for sick day education and have been, overall, extremely helpful and available. The nemours app is also *fantastic* for communication, appointments, medical records, bills etc. We feel very blessed to have moved to this area right before our son was diagnosed- and that we are under the care of this great team!

  • Provider Dr. Charlene T. Robertson

  • Nurse Practitioner None Provided

  • Practice/Hospital Baptist Endocrinology

  • Address 2885 Wellness Avenue Orange City, FL 32763

  • Phone 386-917-7627

  • Adult/Pediatric Adult

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments She is amazing! She is very receptive to all of the methods I have learned from the podcast. She includes the patients in the decision making process instead of being a dictator. She is well versed in both MDI and pumping. She had no problems switching me to dexcom and omnipod when when medtronic was not working for me. Because of her and the knowledge I have from this podcast my A1C has stayed between 5.0 and 5.4 for the last 2 yrs with 94% TIR. I would recommend her to anyone looking for an endo who will work with you to care for all your diabetic needs.

  • Address 2000 SW Archer Road, Gainesville, FL 32608

  • Phone (352) 265-8250

  • Adult/Pediatric Pediatric

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Dr. Bernier saw us in the ER in the wee morning of our diagnosis day. Her bedside manner is incredible and very calming. She has been by our side since day 1 and we now see her regularly in clinic.  She is supportive and listens well - from our immediate request for a CGM and insulin pump, to specific insulin requests, supporting our “bumping and nudging” to Looping. She is a true partner in wanting the best for her patients. She stays informed and involved - we saw her and her family at CWD 2019. She always celebrates our son’s lower and lower A1C and doesn’t slap our hand.

  • Address 2633 Centennial Blvd. Suite 100 Tallahassee, Florida 32308

  • Phone (850) 431-5404

  • Adult/Pediatric Pediatric

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Dr. Deeb empowers parents to take charge of their kids’ care from the start. We were sent home with a Dexcom, and he explained how to make our own dosage changes as we observed how things were working. He gave us his personal cell number and we called to check in & review numbers every morning for the first six weeks. His staff is awesome and supportive. They celebrated when we made changes and had success, and never scolded us for being too bold.

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Dr. Davis was the first medical professional to treat me as a newly diagnosed diabetic.  She is extremely intelligent and is consistently involved in endocrine related research.  As a Type One Diabetic herself, she displays both a professional/medical understanding of the disease and a personal perspective.  On one or more occasions she has displayed her seriousness in managing blood sugar by helping me outside of office hours when I was in need of insulin.

If anyone is in the ATL area and needs guidance, I would recommend visiting the diabetes center at Grady Memorial Hospital.  There you will be met with a specialized care team that includes nutritionists and other professionals.

The staff are willing to answer any questions and fought for my daughter when the insurance wanted to deny the amount of pods she needed each month.

He is an excellent listener and really pays attention when you share things you've observed or learned about your diabetes. He has even recommended medical papers that he thought would help me better understand the science behind my observations. He seems to want his patients to do the things they enjoy and live fully. The office is pretty small and really lovely--none of this pressing a million numbers to get through. He even corresponds by email personally! I had a bit of a tricky time finding a supportive doc when I moved to Indianapolis so I was so relieved to find his practice.

She is so positive and encouraging and really really takes time to know her patients. She is very knowledgeable about diabetes. She described to me in detail the subtle changes she was looking for in my eye because I was curious. She was so proud of me when I achieved good control. She actually did a little celebration dance when I reported my 5.6 A1C! It made me feel so great about the hard work I put in to take care of myself Juicebox style. She doesn’t fear monger at all. She tells it to you straight and is very optimistic about therapies for diabetics. If you are in the Indianapolis area I highly recommend her practice!

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments My son was diagnosed in March 2022. I chose to drive 3 hours from home to Norton Childrens Hospital because of their reputation! They are absolutely top notch! I message constantly through “My chart” when I feel like basal or carb ratio needs to change! They can access my sons Dexcom and Dash info because each night while on Wi-Fi information is sent to them automatically! We were admitted to the hospital on Thursday, discharged on Friday, had a dexcom by Monday and pump placed 2 weeks later! I love their approach especially with my 2 year old! I can’t say enough nice things about them!! (Also admitted and A1C was a 9…I think {by looking at the clarity app} A1C will be close to a 6.2 on July 1…just 3 months later!! I just recently started listening to the juice box podcast and I’m hopeful to lower it even more! Thank you for all you do!

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments I saw Dr. Dipp for several years until I moved away a few months ago. She was fantastic: easy to talk to and listened to my questions. When I started DIY looping, she had no qualms about it even though I was her first patient to use the looping system. When I would go in for appointments, she would basically ask me what I wanted to discuss that day, instead of assuming a topic for me. I really loved having her as my endocrinologist and was thoroughly sad to leave her care when I moved.

Never any shaming when a1c isn’t the best, always encouraging that diabetes is a lifelong journey and you can do this! They are early adopters of new technology and will fight your insurance for you to get the approvals you need. They let (and encourage) parents to learn to tweak carb ratios and settings, and are always there to double-check if you want them to. There are on-call staff 24/7, and if you call after hours you WILL get a call back within 45 minutes (though I have never actually waited that long). Very responsive to MyChart online messages as well. Questions are always answered timely and fully. They do a wonderful job of educating and encouraging.

I am a pediatric endocrinologist in Detroit, Michigan who has been listening to your podcast for about 6 months. Even though I am a relatively young endo with excellent training from a top 3 children's hospital in the country, I really expanded my knowledge about insulin and communication skills with families of T1D patients by listening to you and your guests. So, she’s got her formal education and the immense amount of knowledge you can’t help acquiring just by living with T1D. When you’re with her you feel like she’s got all the time in the world for you. Very receptive to exploring the myriad of ways of managing diabetes. That includes Looping if anyone is looking for an endo who is Loop friendly in the area. In fact, she’s a Looper herself, and more than willing to discuss settings, changes, strategies, etc. We adore her!

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments He's good with thyroid, I have Hashi's, and he diagnosed and treated me. He's open to all sorts of ways to manage. I have been Looping for a year, and he was cool with it even though he didn't know a lot about it. He asked a lot of questions and I gave him links to more websites. He is very amiable.

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments (this comment was left independently for Jamie Jadid the NP) I absolutely love Jamie. She gives me all the freedom in the world to make my own decisions, but if she doesn’t agree with me, will explain why and not let that hold her back from changing insulins at my request. Diabetes is a trial and error situation and one shoe does not fit everyone. She works with me and that’s very important as I am nerdy when it comes to my dietary management. She recommended an InPen because I wasn’t able to get .5 unit doses. She also consults with Dr. Litchfield as needed and I was shocked at my second or third appointment, she had consulted with him and they disagreed with my Oncology as to the onset of my particular case. I had pretty much already come to the same conclusion, so I felt validated that my thinking was on target, unlike my Cardiologist who makes suggestions that won’t go well with my current choice of healthy plant-based diet.

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments We had a bad experience with another Endo at this practice and almost gave up on them altogether. My sister in law had seen Dr. Xu and recommended that we try her first before leaving, so we did. Completely different than our last Dr. She listens to us, let's us try different insulins, and doesn't berate us when our son has some infrequent low blood sugars. They have given us vials of Fiasp to trial, and when we told her we were giving my son 2 shots of lantus a day, switched us to tresiba. She also has pushed for a pump for my son, when our last Dr was trying to tell us a Dexcom would be useless and she doesn't trust it! She also does full body exams on my son when we go... Our last Dr barely looked at his injection sites. Nurses and CDE's there are awesome too, so helpful and responsive. Can get to them via email or patient portal. Would definitely recommend.

He's all about keeping you up-to-date on research and also extremely conscious of cost, i.e. he charges you your primary care co-pay, he asks how much you're paying for supplies and provides any tips/tricks he can to help you eliminate the cost of diabetes. I couldnt speak more highly of him!

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments I started at this endocrinologist when I was diagnosed at 20 years old because of a recommendation from a family friend. My first visit was great, it did not feel as hectic as the hospital overload I hear other Type 1’s go through. Since I was in college at the time I can say that Rachel Griffin, (PA and fellow Type 1) answered every question I had, and even explained things I didn’t think about such as how alcohol will effect my blood sugars. Now being a patient for almost 2 years I can say that they appreciate when a patient wants to take control of their diabetes and give you a feeling of empowerment to take it into your own hands. If there are ever questions on dosing regimens or carb ratios, or even refilling prescriptions, the nursing desk is either there to answer or will call back within a couple hours. It also helps that they have a certified Dietician on staff to help understand how not all carbs are the same (glycemic index).

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments I’ve worked with Dr. Harris for close to a decade and she’s taken care of me through many different stages of my diabetes— from the disengaged teenager, to the engaged but struggling young adult, to the well controlled diabetic who comes in saying “I want to try this new technology.” Dr. Harris is quick to acknowledge the frustrations of life with diabetes and she approaches diabetes management from the perspective of making things easier (“so you can get on with your life”) rather than scolding you for not doing enough. She spends a LOT of time with her patients (which means she often runs behind) but she spends that time really understanding what’s going on, talking through the graphs and different treatment strategies so you understand why changes are being made, and then empowering you to continue making changes after the visit is over.  She’s been incredibly supportive of me trying new technology over the years and was very open to me starting a DIY Loop. I would absolutely recommend her for anyone with T1D living in the Triangle.

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments I cannot say enough good things about the level of care and compassion Dr. LynShue provides to my daughter. She is extremely knowledgeable about all of the latest updates on the tools and technology available to diabetics. She really listens, never rushes through appointments, and is very thorough. I message her often with small questions or concerns and she always gets back to me so quickly. I've called her countless times after hours and she is always so helpful. She works hard to analyze my daughters CGM reports and ensure we have the best basal dosing for her. She celebrates with us when we have a great A1C and encourages us when we have an A1C that we aren't that happy about. My daughter has been a patient of hers since she was 2 years old. She has always adored her and loves going to her office. She is amazing.

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Dr. Thurlow is just amazing. One of the first things she said to my husband and I after our then two year old was first diagnosed was, “It’s ok to cry. It’s ok to grieve a life before diabetes.” She herself has T1, and a child with T1, so she understands it from multiple aspects. Her patience knows no bounds, and she thoughtfully and thoroughly answers any questions we have. My son loves to go see her, and I think that it should speak volumes about her character and her care that a three year old looks forward to visiting his doctor.

I moved to Ohio from Utah about 2 weeks after my daughter’s diagnosis and couldn’t imagine my daughter under anybody else’s care. They are attentive, accommodating, professional, motivating and overall kind. They have been cheerleaders for my daughter since the first day she walked into their office. My daughter wouldn’t talk to any providers after her diagnosis. Just small yes and no head nods, but they were patient with her. They now can’t get her to stop talking. They’re also up on all the newest technology and bend over backwards to ensure my daughter has everything she needs. The world needs more providers and nurse practitioners like these two!

Don’t ask me how I know 😅 .

This is a Tricare only facility and only available to Tricare Prime patients BUT I feel very strongly that military families need to realize these amazing doctors are available. Because these doctors solely work with Tricare they are an enormous asset when it comes to the insurance side of things. There were no denials due to the wrong codes because Tricare can be very particular with that. The doctors know exactly what is covered because they work solely with one insurance.

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments I found Dr. Quddusi online after looking into her credentials. She is so passionate about diabetes! I walked into that office feeling so bad because I had been without insurance for 4 months and was self managing on Walmart Insulin and no long acting. My A1C was 9.1 and I felt ashamed. When I explained my sitaution she said,” You have me now. You never need to go without the insulin you need again. Call my office and we will figure something out.” Also, getting back on my pump was so expensive and it was causing real financial hardship. You see I don’t qualify for assistance but my husband works on commission so every month is feast or famine. She took me off of it and put me on Tresiba(Prev. I took Lantus) She also switched me from Humalog to Lyumjev but had me call my insurance company to see if it was affordable. She created me charts for correctrion factors and carb ratios and shared recepies with me. She showed me how to properly examine my feet daily and what products to use. She gave me insulin samples!

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments Dr. Cogen and the entire team at Childrens National have been wonderful to work with. I mentioned them in Episode #152 (https://www.juiceboxpodcast.com/episodes/jbp152) for how they helped my son when we were on MDI. Since then, they've worked with us to move over son over to a pump. They also enrolled our daughter in TrialNet, found early flags for my daughter, diagnosed our daughter, got her on Dexcom and Omnipod. Now we've got two kids with T1D who are on Dexcom, Omnipod, and Loop with A1Cs of 5.9 and 5.8. (If another episode on this makes sense, I'm happy to return!)

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments I've never met a more soft spoken, compassionate provider in my entire life. She say with us and explained what was going on with my son. She asked questions, listened to all my questions and concerns and has provided us with everything we need. Between her, the nurse practitioner (who's amazing), the nurses, dieticians and the rest of the team; we wouldn't have made it through this transition without them. They are incredibly quick at returning emails through their MyChart program and office calls. I can't not express enough gratitude for all their help, support, and encouragement this past month since my son was diagnosed.

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments  We love Dr. Bekx and her team. Her nurses are amazing, particularly Julie Price, who got us started on Omnipod and has gone above and beyond to help us in any way she can. Everyone we’ve dealt with at the clinic has been kind and respectful to my daughter. We always get quick responses when we ask questions via mychart. Dr Bekx and her team are very knowledgeable and open minded. They trust us to take the lead in our daughter’s care and make adjustments where we see fit, yet they are always willing to give advice and help us make decisions. I couldn’t be happier with the care my daughter has received.

  • Juicebox Podcast Listener Comments The team at LHSC is very well managed and the education they provide is like going to nursing school! They are forward thinking and the education is incremental and covers all aspects of diabetes management. It’s well organized and the team you are assigned includes a nurse, social worker and dietician. They are always available via phone or email to help you make adjustments and look at your charts/glooko report and then make suggested changes to your settings along with the reasons why they suggest it. Our Endo and CDE were talking about a pump within a week of diagnosis, started the process within two months and had us pumping around six months which is very quick in Ontario. You don’t leave the hospital without a CGM.

Now I’m Looping and she’s totally on board. I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Halperin. Her teams dietician Marsha is really supportive too. Also I live 8 hours away and she does virtual care with me! If you are in Ontario looking for an endo Dr. Halperin is awesome.
