Adam Lasher on American Idol

Scott Benner

It was only a week ago when Adam Lasher first appeared on American Idol. Lasher's pre-audition interview with Ryan Seacrest revealed that he is the nephew of guitar legend Carlos Santana, but his famous Uncle was just the beginning of what would be a rather strange and wonderful audition.

The next three minutes were a whirlwind of oddities that culminated in Adam performing his original song 'These Shoes' and a golden ticket to the American Idol Hollywood round that airs tonight on Fox.

Adam wore a bright blue headband that appeared to be more functional than style oriented. His face and dark beard instantly reminded Jennifer Lopez of Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, her comments must have made it back to New York because the next day Fallon was dressing up like Lasher on his show.

After the Jimmy Fallon frivolity came to an end Keith Urban asked, thinking it was Lasher's phone, about a small case clipped to his guitar strap. It wasn't a phone in the case, rather Adam has type 1 diabetes and was wearing his Dexcom continuous glucose monitor (CGM) so that he could watch his blood sugar level.

When the time came for Adam to play the judges finally realized that the thumb on his playing hand was broken and wrapped in what Harry Connick Jr. called, "a raggedy-ass lookin' cast" but non of that mattered because soon, despite his broken thumb, tossed hair, type 1 diabetes and an only so-so Fallon impression, Adam Lasher's music is revealed to be as soulful as it gets and he earns a ticket to Hollywood Week.

Tonight a rabid base of Idol viewers, many who live with type 1 diabetes in their lives, will be cheering for Adam to move on to the next round.

You can hear Adam on The Juicebox Podcast talking about his Idol experience, diabetes, how he broke his thumb and much more.

Update

Adam performed 'Wicked Games' during Hollywood week and was put through to the next round! Check out the video... stay until the end when Harry Connick Jr. says, "I think he's a super star... I think he's got something". Good luck to Adam as he competes!

'Life Is Short' shout-out on FEaB

Scott Benner

There I was two weeks ago minding my own business on the sofa, watching television out of one eye and looking at Twitter out of the other. I saw that Matt Mira (From The Nerdist) was asking if anyone wanted to ask Scott Mosier (Film producer and all around great guy) a question for the next episode of their PodCast, FEaB. I had no context for his question, but as it turns out, they were about to sit down to record an episode and wanted listener questions.

I, having taken a photograph of Scott in the distant past, replied...

Scott Mosier

@MattMira Does @smosier remember/still have this photo that I took of him? #preDogmaand just as I was about to press send I thought, "What the hell" and added, ...& Would you guys read my book?

I haven't thought about sending the tweet since that moment, until today when I heard this.

Anyway, how mind-bending is it that a photo I took in 1998 when I was twenty seven, at a Kevin Smith film festival, would lead to a book mention in 2013? The Internet is indeed a strange and wonderful place.

DSMA Live (feat. me)

Scott Benner

The nicest recurring compliment that I've ever received comes from people who know me in real life, has to, here's why. People say that when they read my writing they can, "hear my voice". One of my dear friends told me that it's like having me read to him. I always find this sentiment particularly touching.

So if "having me read to you" sounds like an attractive idea, you are in luck. On Monday, December 17, 2012 at 9 pm I'm going to be chatting my silly head off with Bennet and Lorraine on DSMA Live, Parents Talk. Feel confident that you'll hear more then enough of my mellifluous and dulcet tones to give you the ability to hear me when you read my stuff too. Cause no joke, I talk a lot. I'm betting that anyone that tunes in late won't even know Lorraine and Bennet are there, sorry guys!

The hosts haven't shared what topics they are hoping to cover with the exception of one. We are going to talk in a bit of detail about how I forged the good relationship that we have at Arden's school and turned it into our current type I diabetes management plan. The rest will be a surprise even to me. So if 504 plans and cool new ways to manage your kid's BGs while they're not with you sounds like a fun way to spend an hour, this will be right up your alley.

I can tell you a few things for sure. It'll be fun, informative and if you call in to say hello or ask a question... I'd love that very much!
